National committee of the "Institut des hautes études scientifiques à Bures-sur-Yvette" (NC IHES)
The Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) is an advanced research institute which focuses on mathematics, theoretical physics and the mathematical aspects of molecular biology. Switzerland has been a co-sponsor of the IHES since 1973, and the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) is represented on the Board of Directors of the institute.
The IHES private research institute is recognised in France as a charitable foundation and conducts internationally highly regarded research into a wide variety of theoretical natural sciences. The institute enables outstanding researchers to spend a research period in an environment where they can focus exclusively on their research without the distraction of administrative tasks or teaching commitments. The IHES publishes information on its activities via its website and a periodic newsletter, and its research results are published in the specialist magazine “The Mathematical Publications of the IHES” twice a year. The IHES also organises events such as scientific conferences and open days, which aim to improve public awareness of theoretical basic research.
